It’s hard to know exactly why something is trending, but believe it or not there are some trends to trending. In other words, there are a few typical reasons something might be trending on Google, Facebook, Linkedin–or a combination of all three. Below are different moments when something might be trending and how you can take that knowledge and apply it to your link building:
- When something big is recently announced.
- When something big recently launches.
- When something big happens in the news.
So how can this knowledge improve your link building?
Break down the keyword phrases that are trending, then optimize your content against those keywords to begin appearing in search results. Consider the keywords that might be trending in the following examples:
Example #1–The biggest announcements are often sequels to something that gained speed a while ago. A movie or an album release is a great indication of this. When Taylor Swift’s new album was leaked, words like “leaked” and “first” and “introducing” would have worked as great keywords.
Example #2–Let’s look back to when Google launched its new disavow tool. When this tool was launched, keywords such as “release date” and “new features” are received a lot of search volume. It works the same way when something big getss launched in stores, such as a toy–remember Ferby?
Example #3–Big news stories are always trending, which makes optimizing around them a little bit trickier. Choose keywords that are related to the big news event. When Prince William and Kate married, words like “royal” and “marriage” were trending on all platforms.
This is just one simple approach of using the Google Trends tool to try and rank high against trending keywords. It shouldn’t replace your other link building, keyword research and content optimization efforts. Instead, use it as one more tactic in your overall SEO strategy.
