Sethin Godin and Amazon are attempting to blaze a new trail that’s sure to spook the very traditional book publishing industry.
The two have teamed up for the Domino Project – an alternative method to marketing, producing and publishing a book leveraging Amazon’s existing infrastructure without publishers – to launch Seth’s latest title, Poke the Box. The book will be available March 1 as a Kindle e-book (viewable on PC, Mac, iPad and Kindle), as well as in hardcover and audio. Seth is hoping to reach a larger audience, faster under the Domino Project by leveraging the power of digital media and distribution. The project allows Amazon to further deepen their foothold on books by stepping into publishing, along with retailing.
The Domino Project sounds eerily like the gigantic shakeup we’ve witnessed in the music industry, where greedy music producers and distributors saw their money trees dry up as digital music downloads replaced CDs. Or the big box video stores closing their doors across North America as more viewers stream movies on demand into their living rooms. It’s only a matter of time until we see many other traditional businesses lose out to innovation as a result of the Internet.
