Use Wordpress for Your Website, Not Just Your Blog

Great post written on the value of using the free Wordpress platform not just as a blog, but as a website. I’ve talked to many startups and small business owners that don’t have a website to just use Wordpress for their site. So many advantages including the fact you can get something up in minutes! But, more importantly, there is so much functionality and control built into Wordpress, along with it being very search-engine friendly, that it can’t be ignored. Here is an excerpt from the post “Why Settle for a Blog When You Can Have a Blogsite“:
Blogging tools have evolved significantly due to the tremendous popularity of blogging in general. Because of this evolution blog software has actually become one of the best ways for small businesses to easily build feature rich, simple to edit, search engine friendly web sites.
I would urge anyone without a web site or with a boring static brochure site to take a good hard look at free piece of software called WordPress. The current version of the software can be downloaded from WordPress.org (They have a hosted blog version at WordPress.com but you want the download from the .org site.)
You can use this software to create your entire website whether you have or want a blog or not. (But, of course you need a blog too.) One of the best functions of this set-up is that anyone in your organization with the proper login permission can update and edit the site including adding pages, text and images without any knowledge of HTML or web design software such as Dreamweaver.
On of the core elements of WordPress is something called a theme. This is essentially the design template that controls the look and feel of all of the pages throughout the site. There are lots of places you can get pre-designed templates for blogs, but recently designers have started creating themes for the type of web site implementation I’m talking about in this article. Using these themes your web site looks like, well, a web site, instead of a blog.

A website, of course, I use it. I was wondering if someday WP would be used as a website too not just blog. Great, thanks a lot.

While I don’t really think everyone needs a blog, I can say from experience that with a little bit of know-how, you can make a fantastic website from Wordpress. There are plugins for just about everything and it makes updates a snap. As the platform gets better, there are fewer and fewer reasons NOT to use it as your primary site (assuming you have the design chops to create a theme you like).

Hi, this post is really useful as you are suggesting to build a website using Wordpress, and not only for blogs. I do agree new technologies come in to light and it takes some time to implement them. Good post.

I already do! Wordpress can be used as a great content management platform with a little bit of work and careful selection of plugins and templates. I am even running a course on how to build your own website using Wordpress in London

Yeah for small sites this can do wonder where the publisher does not need to be technical enough to produce a small scale website

I agree! it is just reasonable to do so….For small businesses one of the biggest challenge is perhaps updating and maintaining the website but wordpress makes the whole process easier…

Even with the most basic WordPress website… you can rename your Blog page to “Press Release” and turn off comments to write your own Company News Articles/Releases.

This helped me – I’ve been struggling with Drupal and was thinking of just using WordPress – use it for my blogs and love it.

I started out with hardly any technical ability and really didn’t think I would be able to get hosted blog up and running. However, because of the ease of use of Wordpress I can now set up niche blogs in an hour or so.
With some niches a traditional website format suits me better than a blog and with many of the great themes now available, this has proved just as easy and effective in getting my products our there.
Thanks for a great post.

I utilize a blog along side my site and find it to be a great idea. I interlink them both of course and the wordpress blog keeps things fresh on a daily basis. Its been my first try at the social networking of my business. Not to mention, writing about things pertaining to business gets the mind working on new ideas daily.
